Ten reasons for having tea

Posted on 31. Aug, 2008

I don’t usually drink tea that much but on occasions I might take a sip or two. But if you are a tea fanatic maybe you can use this list to impress your uncles and aunts in the next time they visit you peeps.

1. Antioxidants
Antioxidants in the tea protect our body from the effects of pollution and minor ravage of aging

2. Caffeine is lot less than coffee
There is two to three times more caffein in coffee than tea. If you can’t handle coffee than go for tea, which contains 30 to 40 mg caffeine per cup rather than 135 mg – oops almost wrote MB for megabytes lol

3. Prevents heart attack / stroke
Tea can help keep your arteries smooth and clog-free. A study showed 70% lower risk of heart attack in people who had 2 to 3 cups of tea (black) compared to those that don’t drink.

4. Protects your bones
It’s said that people who drink tea often had stronger bones despite their age, body weight and excercise routines.

5. Yummy smile
Tea actually contains flouride and tannins that keep plaque at bay. So if you are not into the sugary tea then use unsweetened version.

6. Immune defense gets stronger
Research shows that those who had tea compared to coffee had a higher immune activity…

7. Fights cancer..what??
The stuff called polyphenols. The antioxidant which is found in tea is known for cancer-fighting effects. But obviously it’s just an antioxidant, so can’t protect you completely..

8. It will keep you hydrated
Obviously water for me is best in this case, but it’s sad that tea or other caffeinated drinks do contribute to our fluid needs

9. Lose weight..woohooo
There are no calories in tea, unless you add sweetner or milk.. But then again I am not saying have 5 snicker bars a day and one cup of tea.. no no

10. Increases your metabolism
It’s said that green tea increases our metabolic rate so we can additionally burn 70 to 80 calories by drinking upto 5 cups a day. But once again, do walk as a well to burn calories.

But the reason I usually have tea is whenever I am not well or just want to feel relaxed as I never got used to coffee unless it’s as sweet as tea itself ..

What about you? Do you have any reasons why one SHOULD have tea or shouldn’t.. :)

My dad doesn’t like tea at all, in his whole life time ever has he even touched a cup of tea hehe. But yah if you wanna look a bit “grown up” maybe that’s a sophisticated way of doing so. But then again coffee is topping the list all over, I think more people drink coffee than tea unless we include the chinese population.. then I guess tea wins…

thx for commenting :)

Yooohooo more reasons to cite why am a tea drinker than coffee which is what we as Coorgs grow :P .Yea green tea is a more healthier option & women need a lot more antioxidants to stay healthy & so tea is a better option than coffe…. not to forget the new flavours that are there in the market like lemon tea, peach tea, ginger n mint ,Orange, tulsi etc etc….I as a tea lover just love em :P

TEA in our Asian society is not only social but table -talk drink….However, our tea recipe is questionable…Tea contains antioxidants called catechins which dilate blood vessels but adding milk to it while boiling negates this potential health benefit bcz milk protein caseins conjugate thru a chemical reaction with antioxidants rendering it ineffective specially in KARAK CHAI…So enjoy ur cuppa of tea either black or green tea…personally I take green one bcz black tea leaves are fermented when processed for general consumption…fermentation further reduces antioxidant effect…If u dont want to skip milk add soya milk based products which has no animal protein casein…even much better solution use lemon instead…For further information consult ur physician or Begum Sahiba

Oh yah exactly. I guess there is lots of things that tea drinkers can try out isn’t it. I haven’t tried even half of them. Might take a break and see what’s on offer :)

@ ghulam
Exactly janab. I guess the table talk drink is what has made it so popular, the conversations that flourish when each person around a table has a cup are amazing. And true thing you mentioned that our “Asian” version of tea is a bit different as boiling surely doesn’t do the milk any good. :)

I absolutely love tea! I can’t do without it. I need to have tea at least twice a day…otherwise I’ll go mad. I’ve always known tea is healthy for us but now with all these proofs, I’m going to show all those who are against me drinking tea! Wohooo! thanks for that Wakas bhai!

Like Saanj di said, there isn’t just one kind of tea you can enjoy, there are So many different flavors. I love Lemon, Ginger & Green tea. If you like to drink tea, you must try all different flavors too.

Beside drinking tea on a normal basis, I can’t do without tea in Ramadan. If I don’t have tea in the morning, all day I have a headache. And once I open my fast, I have to have tea to keep myself awake from falling alseep without praying and doing homework. :)

Thanks for this lovely informative post!

I wasn’t allowed to drink tea till I was 16-17 because of that “bachay chai nahi peetay” logic! :D But now I can drink 3-4 cups of tea daily, without having to give the above reasons! :D

And I like the truck drivers wali chai, karakh one! Not the plain black one. ;)
