Joint family system is awful. South Asian mother in laws, in particular, are incredibly possessive of their sons. This system gives them unlimited power and control, which is very dangerous and sheer hell for daughter-in-laws. The best setup is to have your own apartment or home, so you are guaranteed your own privacy, while living close by to your parents.

And older Pakistani and Indian parents have to stop treating their adult sons and daughters like toddlers. They have to allow them decision making power and freedom. If they don't, what often ends up happening is grown children moving away from them using their jobs as an excuse from getting way from their parents' suffocating, unjust grip.

Islam teaches that while we must respect and care for parents, parents DO NOT have a free pass to abuse daughter-in-laws, or to deny their children a certain level of freedom to make choices in their lives.

Well, depends how you look at it frank. If it was for the purpose of putting you in a routine than its probably for your own best. At a young age we never realize who is thinking for our best and who isn't, and that it would be very uncool according to our friends if we do what our teacher says. But respecting the teacher is quite important :)

well i started SAT classes and my teacher made me write down 'i promise to you that i will study the SAT an hour everyday' and i signed it. which i was forced to i told him i didnt want too but if i didnt we wont continue. first of all i spelled my name wrong purposely and didnt even write a complete sentence, but since i was forced to does it make it my fault, i already broke it. i thought it was bull how he forced me. what do you think? P.S. i have the paper that i wrote it on. he said it was to make me committed to study, didnt work.
