What does your Body Language say about you?

The way you talk and carry a conversation says a lot about you, but that one thing that can sometimes throw away your intention is your body language. Often at times the way you stand while talking, or the way you hold your arms tightly into yourself, scream out in such a manner that your words might not match at all.

So how can you fix that?

Think of someone you respect, either it’s a leader or a friend. See how they walk, how they talk and how to carry themselves. Don’t just focus on what they say, but also how they say those things. Pay attention to postures, expressions and they way they use their hands when they talk.

Mimicking others is not a bad thing, but one thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to choose people who represent the values and traits you want to reflect. Find people you you see as role models, who demonstrate warmth, integrity, and confidence. As time passes, you will be more aware of your own verbal and non-verbal signals, and that’s when you will have the true understanding of how your body language affects the way you carry out a conversation.

Some quick tips

  • Be mindful of your posture—stand tall and maintain an open stance to show confidence.
  • Avoid closed-off gestures like crossing your arms, which can signal discomfort or resistance.
  • Use natural hand gestures to emphasize your points without going overboard.
  • Maintain eye contact with the people you’re speaking to, showing that you’re engaged and paying attention.
